“Don’t Worry About What People Think”

Good morning Lovelies. Dear Lord, I don’t know who or what will cross my path today. But I do know that You are my Rock and my Fortress. You are my Shield and my Strong Tower. Help me to anchor myself to You today. Teach me how to stand strong in You and choose only Your way today. Help me walk by Your truth and not my feelings. Help me to embrace anything that comes my way as an opportunity to see You at work and as an opportunity to point others to You. Thank You that You love me and nothing can ever take that away from me! Even if I fail today and fall short, You whisper Your unconditional love deep into my soul and remind me that Your mercies are new every morning. That truly amazes me, Lord. Thank You for meeting with me today. Would You wake me again tomorrow with the same sweet whisper of Your love? I can’t wait to meet with You again. In the Mighty Matchless Name of Jesus, Amen.

Do you worry too much what others think? It is good to be a sensitive person and consider other people’s feelings and thoughts. However, you need balance. You should be able to act according to your thoughts and feelings and not get trapped seeking to please others. It’s very human to want to be liked. Isolation is dangerous for our mental health. But if you betray yourself to get people to like you that causes problems that are at least as bad if not worse.

One of the most natural things that humans do is be afraid of what other people will think. You may not think this affects you. Are you who people think you are? Or do you let them see only a persona carefully crafted for likeability? Do you tiptoe through life, saying and doing only what passes through your internal social acceptability filter? Fear of social judgment wears many masks: shame, shyness, etiquette, awareness, temperament. Whatever form it comes in, its impact is to limit, to constrain, to constrict. Why are we so concerned about what others think of us? As with so much else, we inherited this trait from our ancestors.

When you stop trying to impress others, you can express your true self more fully and connect with people, more genuinely, openly, intimately. The less time and energy you spend on image management, on making your life presentable to others, the more time you can spend on things that really matter. Be authentic. Have the courage to allow people to see the real you. Be willing to be judged, and even encourage it. It’s good for self-knowledge and for developing thick skin. As you become and express your best self, others will think great things about you, and the few that don’t won’t matter anyway.

If all this is too extreme for you, start by taking small steps. Expect it to be hard, and show yourself some compassion; you’re swimming against ancient currents thousands of generations old. Rather than not caring at all what others think of you, start by just caring less. Be open to what they think and feel, and consider their opinions, but decide for yourself how to act. Care what the important people in your life think, but only those whose opinions you value. Strangers should not get a vote in how you live your life.

But popularity is no guarantee of truth and human flattery does not bring God’s approval. Sadness lies ahead for those who chase after the crowd’s praise rather than God’s. Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! For so did their fathers to the false prophets. Luke 6:26 Live life, give people hope and share your heart, wisdom, and resources. Never place a period where God says there should be a comma. As always peace and blessings, be safe. Take advantage of your opportunities but never allow your opportunities to take advantage of you. Remember God loves you and so do I. © krw 3.28.18
